How to train a 1 year old neopolitan mastiff?

My brother has a one year old Neopolitan Mastiff that never got trained as a puppy. He's now a year old and will not listen. Any suggestions?

Enroll it in a dog training class with a professional dog trainer (not from Petsmart or Petco). It may cost a little up front, but it will work a lot better than trying to train by yourself.

First you need to figure out what motivates him. For most dogs, it's treats (the yummier the better!), some dogs will work for a favorite toy. Start out with some very delicious treats, things he doesn't get normally, like boiled chicken or something like that, cut into little bits. if the problem is that he doesn't listen, start by working on attention. call his name, and when he looks at you say "Yes!" and give him a treat. repeat until he always looks when you call his name. then start training things like sit and down. to teach sit, just slowly move the treat over the top of his head until he naturally sits. say sit and when he does say "yes!" and give him treats. you need to make training fun for him. start with these exercises and you will notice that he is starting to pay more attention and listen. dogs need a reason to listen, if he knows following directions means he'll get yummy treats, he'll happily do what you ask! also he is at the perfect age for an obedience class! most places offer puppy classes and classes for adolescent dogs like your brothers. they will teach you how to teach him!

Yeah, obedience class for sure. You're talking very large dog, so he most definately will need training. In the meantime, treats are a great bribery tool, dogs will do anything for treats, might even be good once in a while. Be patient, its worth it.

I have 2 neo's and I love them. The males tend to be very subborn. I would reccomend taking an obediance class. besides that just be consistant in your training. before you feed him make him sit and lay down before you feed him. also, stay……Make sure he is always fed well because they get very cranky when they are hungry. preactice practice practice. assign hand signals with commands. the only collars that seem to work with ther fat necks are the choker with prongs, which are somewhat controversial. be very sturn and dont let him win mae sure he does what you are telling him to do. thats all i can think of right now. hope this helps.
